A few months left until our son is born. We put a lot of thought into what products are going into the home so that they’re safe for a baby to interact with, don’t off-gas any harmful chemicals, and that they’re durable because buy nice or buy twice!
This is especially important for his nursery because we don’t want to just buy stuff that we’ll have to replace, will break easily, or he’ll get bored of quickly. So when I saw play couches all across social media I knew I had to get one for my son.
Firstly, there’s a lot of play couches on the market. Previously working at a furniture, and bedding e-commerce site I learned that there will always be a lot of competitors with similar features but there’s always 1 or 2 brands that are clearly the best.
Enter, Possum Play.
Is Possum Play Australian Owned?
Yes, Possum Play was created by two besties in Australia named Renee, and Giorgia who in their own words “grew up destroying their childhood couches and decided their own kids needed children’s furniture that was purpose built for fun.”
What is the the Possum Play Couch?
The Possum Play Couch is the ultimate modular play-couch. It’s a configurable couch/sofa made up of 6 cushions covered in premium microsuede fabric. The one pictured here is the shade “sunshine” but we also have spare covers in the shade “peanut”.
Why do kids love play couches?
Play couches act as blank canvas for kids to independently place in a safe yet fun way! They’re a great hybrid between practical furniture, and fun toy for kids of all ages.
They’re an open-ended toy so kids need to use their imagination to find a purpose, and method to how they play with it. Plus, because the play couch is made of a soft yet comfortable foam it won’t hurt even the smallest of adventurers when they’re building a space ship, castle, race car or more!
Is the foam used for Possum Play Couch tested to be safe for young kids?
Yes! The foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified which means it’s been certified by CertiPUR, an internationally recognised third party, that the Possum Play Couch is free of any ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates, and is low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
That’s so comforting for a first time mum like me because it means it’s been laboratory tested to not contain anything hazardous materials that could be potentially allergenic, carcinogenic or disruptive to my son’s hormone systems. So no matter if he’s diving head first into the play couch, or taking a nap on it, he’ll be inhaling no nasties!
What’s the Possum Play covers made of?
The covers are soft yet durable, and made of brushed microsuede that is STANDARD 100 OEKO-TEX® certified. This material completely covers the entire play couch including the lower base, toppers, and triangle cushions.
What’s great about these covers is that they’re stain resistant, and can easily be spot cleaned using soft detergent, and a light damp cloth. Or you can remove the covers completely, and machine wash on a cold setting.
If you want a spare cover set you can also buy them here or buy waterproof liners made of 100% polyester with a polyutherane laminate here. That’s the same fabric composite for many mattresses!
Because the covers have the STANDARD 100 OEKO-TEX® certification it means it’s been laboratory tested, and is internationally recognised to not include any harmful substances that are known to be harmful to ones’s health. OEKO-TEX® tests 100 control parameters, and has increasingly stricter requirements based on the intention of the textile. For example, as the covers are intended to be used for children, the Possum play couch covers fall under either Product Class I or Product Class II which respectively tests for products intended for children up to 3 years old, and direct skin contact.
Can you buy any expansion packs for the Possum Play couch?
Yes, you can currently 4 expansion packs: the moon arch set, wedge set, circle set, and armrest set. These Possum Play couch expansion packs range from $50 to $225 per set.
Is the Possum Play couch comfy?
Hell yes.
I'm currently 5, and a half months pregnant, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've taken a cheeky nap or two on it while organising the nursery.
Even my husband has taken naps on it too after building different baby products like our furniture.
Thankfully, the Possum Play couch is a no assembly required product. Just like a bed in a box/mattress in a box, you just need to remove the plastic packaging, and it'll inflate to it's normal size in no time.
