Why We Got a New Bed

We recently got the Origin Hybrid Plus mattress and the upholstered bed base in a queen size for my three year old’s guest bedroom at my in laws’ home. He sleeps over at least once a week which allows my husband and I to have a regular date night of just of two. Protecting that time together matters to us as we believe in nurturing our relationship as a married couple, not limited to exchanges as parents. Having a proper bed set up at their place makes it possible without compromising our son's sleep.

We already knew the quality of Origin mattresses since my in laws own one themselves and had always spoken about how comfortable it was. That gave us the confidence to choose the Hybrid Plus for our son’s room.

Delivery

The delivery was smooth, well managed, and considerate to the needs of my in-laws. The courier team called in advance to confirm the schedule. When I mentioned the mattress was going to my in laws’ home and that they are in their sixties, I was told the team could carry everything inside. They went beyond expectations by bringing the mattress and base all the way into the bedroom which required climbing the front steps and then an internal spiral staircase. That made it much easier for my in laws and meant we didn’t have to move a heavy 37 kilogram mattress ourselves or wait for us to visit to move it.

Set Up

Unboxing the mattress was straightforward. Like other bed in a box mattresses, it arrived vacuum sealed. Once opened, it expanded to its full 29 centimetre height within minutes. My son was fascinated by the way it unfurled and inflated on its own "like a jumping castle".

The upholstered bed base took less than five minutes to put together. The frame parts slotted into place without tools or fiddly attachments. I also appreciated the packaging as both the mattress and topper had an extra protective sheet so they stayed clean while being moved. The mattress also has two stitched side handles which are helpful for adjusting its position. I'm 155cm so those handles made lifting, and shifting much more manageable.

Mattress Design

The Origin Hybrid Plus combines durable steel springs with pressure relieving foam. It uses Origin’s proprietary HexaGrid technology for targeted back and joint support. The springs are reinforced along the edges which stops the sides from sagging and gives more usable sleep space. The mattress cover is made from eco friendly Tencel, a soft fabric derived from sustainable wood pulp that is hypoallergenic, washable, and breathable. This helps with airflow and cooling during sleep. We're huge fans of tencel, and it's actually our preferred fabric for our bedsheets.

The comfort layer is dual sided with medium firm on one side and firm on the other. You can unzip and flip it to customise the feel. The mattress is designed not to need rotation thanks to Origin’s AntiGravity springs which hold their shape under daily use. We've had so many issues with our previous Koala mattresses sagging so its a huge relief we won't have to deal with that in the future for our son's Origin mattress. All foams used are CertiPUR US certified which means they are low in VOCs and free from harmful chemicals.

Comfort

The Hybrid Plus has a plush pillow top that feels soft when you first lie down but the springs quickly provide firm underlying support. The combination of foam and springs spreads body weight evenly which reduces pressure points. Motion isolation is noticeable. When my son moves on one side of the bed, it does not transfer strongly across to the other side. Cooling technology built into the top layers helps maintain a steady temperature which is useful during warmer nights.

My in laws tried sitting and lying on the mattress themselves, and said it felt stable, and supportive. For my son it has been comfortable from the first night, and he has slept soundly through each stay.

Comparison to Other Mattress Brands

In the past we have tried Koala, Ecosa and Newentor mattresses. Each lacked proper edge support and some began sagging within months. The Koala mattresses in particular required regular rotation but still developed soft spots which led to warranty claims and replacements. Those experiences were frustrating (see here for Ecosa review, and here for Koala v Ecosa review).

The Origin Hybrid Plus feels sturdier and has more technical features than those brands. The reinforced steel springs and HexaGrid lumbar support make it feel like a more advanced design. The removable Tencel cover is practical for keeping the mattress clean which other brands we tried did not offer. With a 15 year warranty, Origin shows more confidence in long term durability. Based on both our experience and my in laws’ with their own Origin mattress, the Hybrid Plus is a reliable choice.
